N e w s p a p e r : B r a i n s t o r m

We met up with Ioana to discuss our theme and content; almost immediately we decided to go for "Obsession" - or at least brainstorm that specific theme and see what we can come up with.
First we looked up the word in a dictionary

Obsession – the domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc. (cf. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/obsession)

Then a few questions came up in our discussion:

- What am I obsessed about?
- What can be considered an obsession?
- What happens when you are obsessed?

We decided to write down individually all words we come across when thinking of obsession.
My words were as follows:

* people, dreams, music, happiness, finishing, state of mind, colours, being up-to-date, rumours, what happens next, future, face, peoples moods, relationships, spending, repetition, having something to do, mentality

All very positively connotated. Ioana had the more negatively connotated words such as;

* hypnosis, fear, self perception, fight, disappointment, anger, regret, complexion, animals, happiness, fetishism, mind, subconscious, power, mental disorder, mentality, anxiety, imagination, dream, delight , addiction, domination, acrophobia, people, state of mind, becoming obsessed with a person, sex, psychology, passion, skill, compulsion

All these words were very different but we started seeing some sort of pattern, and the sentence "desire to escape" came up. The desire to escape from routine, the every-day-life we all go through. The newspaper could be a walk into knowing/being aware of this routine and escaping it. A walk into sub-conscious and dream.

Ioana and I are both really interested in the theory of happiness and sub-conscious so this sort of came naturally from us.

We started to think a little about the design and some of the ideas were:

- from black to colourful
- good and evil/negative and positive = contrasts
- repetition, routine

I found a quote in "Computer Arts" magazine by Marian Bantjes:
"I look for something that delights me, which doesn't necessarily mean light and cheery. Of course the pinnacle is to find something you wish you'd done yourself"

This sort of reflects the idea of our newspaper, for people to find it inspiring and our newspaper to represent something delightful and dreamy although not necessarily light and cheery.

Now, the name of our newspaper: Ioana came up with it and inspired by our theme 'desire to escape', a word which was completely perfect - ESCAPADE.

For the front cover we decided to add thick ones and then cut out the letters E-S-C-A-P-A-D-E and spray paint them through (and so the next page would be a typo-poster)
